STREET NAME EXPLANATION

The sixteenth-century shipbuilder Cornelis Pietersz Boom. In order to connect his yard on the Lastage with the surrounding water, he had two canals dug. These were then both named after him, as the owner.

The ground floor of this apartment is designed by the famous Italian designer and architect Allesandro Mendini, among other things famous for his designs for Alessi, but also as architect of the Groninger Museum. Mendini is considered one of the most important artists of the Postmodernism.

Since the 70's Mendini fights for the renewal of design and architecture: as standard-bearer of the Italian Radical Design, he unchained an anarchy in art: he did away with the dogmas that applied in the modernist art and architecture until then and he wanted to lift boundaries between art, design, architecture and sculpture. While he was very serious in his pursuit of innovation, his designs were often full of humor. Mendini loved to apply an abundance of ornaments, colors and shapes that had been forbidden for a long time amongst artists and designers. His work usually characterizes itself by playfulness and contradiction: just like the Groninger Museum this apartment characterizes itself by the contradiction of playful use of color and a theatrical monumentality of, for example, the double staircase that leads upstairs. When the apartment was handed over, it was frequently shown in design and living magazines all over the world, due to the unique character of the design.

For the implementation of the apartment Mendini worked together with the famous architect Cees Dam, who also designed the city hall of Amsterdam.
