with outbuildings was built. Known as Gunpowder Mill No. 3. The complex comprises a laboratory, sheds, a quenching tower and service houses. Rare example of an eighteenth-century powder factory with nineteenth-century adjustments. In 1709 an explosion took place in the powder mill Het Oorlogschip on the Heiligeweg (now the Overtoom) in Amsterdam, owned by the firm Cornelis van Tulden & Cie. Permit for rebuilding was not granted by the city. Permission was granted in 1710 to move the powder factory to a site outside the city. Residents of the intended factory revolted against this, and so the establishment could not proceed. In 1718 a new permit was applied for, this time by the notable Nicolaes Calkoen from Amsterdam. The permit was granted and the business took off, initially using a horse mill. After several changes of ownership, the company came to Hendrik van Hoorn in 1742, who was described as a "race gunpowder maker", and who also owned other gunpowder mills. The company remained in the hands of the said family until 1843.
